Wednesday Jun 19 Sunny, windy & warm Creston, BC
The weather this morning was marginal. Being in the mountains, expect anything, in fact, we watched a BCTV news clip about snow on the Okanagan Connector. Snow in June! Yup, BC is mountainous.
Anyway enough about the weather. By noon, the sun was shining so after a quick bite, we headed to the Discovery Centre. After paying for our canoe trip, we organized our back pack and headed to the jumping off point for our guided canoe tour. We met Spencer and Ashland who helped us into the canoe and off we went.
Here's the wetlands from the Standing Rock trail. The level of the water in the wetlands can vary from month to month.
As you see, these few pictures were taken when the wind wasn't blowing too hard. We did experience a couple of nasty winds that blew us right against the reeds both times. Interesting to learn that the bullrushes, reeds, etc. are actually floating. I pushed my paddle against the edge and the mass really was floating! Spencer stripped off the outer bits of a bullrush and gave it to us to try. Edible he said, but definitely a different taste.
Our hour tour was almost up, so we headed back to base. After a short walk we were back at the main building.
In the Discovery Centre, we looked at the exhibits. The building is not large but they had a number of stuffed birds (taxidermy). I thought you might like to see some of them.
Jen took the picture below as we headed back to Creston.
The building with the red sloped roof in the distance was where we started our canoe trip. We covered a lot of the wetlands and got about as close as we could to the highway. A thoroughly delightful afternoon's paddle.
The Skimmerhorn Range in the distance.
That's about it for today. When we got back to camp, our little patio table and one of our metal lawn chairs had been blown over. The wind does blow around here, but wait for a few minutes and calm usually returns.
See you next time.
