Tuesday Aug 20                                                   Sunny & warm                                          Myra Canyon, BC
I am looking forward to today. Jen & I are heading to Myra Canyon. I want to ride my bike on the KVR rail trail and across the historic trestles. If you are unfamiliar with Myra Canyon, you can find more info here. This link to the restoration society contains a picture of a trestle on fire during the devastating fire that wiped out most of the trestles.

Interestingly, Myra Canyon is just a couple of ridges over from where we are camped, but it's going to take about 45 minutes to go down into the valley, drive a bit south, then head back up into the hills. The last 8 km is on the Myra Canyon Forest Service road—gravel.

Let's go!

We arrived at the parking lot at Myra Station.
I left Jen at the van and took off to explore a bit of the trail. When I realized the trail was, for the most part, pretty smooth, I went back to the van and got Jen.

Hopefully the pictures will speak for themselves. The views of the canyon and the trestles were awe-inspiring. If you look closely at the pictures you will see the trestles, and/or the line in the trees where the trail is.
Imagine a train coming through this rock cut.
At this point, I headed back to the van to get Jen. And…...here she comes!

Notice how the benches are miniature trestles. Smart thinking!

Oops, she's off again!
Jen made it just a little past this marker.

We rested for a while then Jen suggested I continue on while she returned to Alfie.

So off I went.

This sign is a bit misleading until you realize the number 18 (on top of the short post on the right) is the trestle number. What the sign refers to are the signs hanging off the side of the trestle itself.

Looking back from where I came.

The other end of this tunnel.

Looking ahead at what's to come.

Looking back again. Can you find the backside of the first tunnel?

Looking even further back...

Here's what I'm heading for...

No, I did not ride out on this trestle. I guess I could have, but I didn't. Nothing to do with a fear of heights...nah!

I turned around and pedalled back to the van and Jen.

It was just before noon and time for a coffee. We headed back down the gravel forest service road and into Kelowna and the Kootenay Coffee Co. for coffee and a treat.
Back at the RV park, I went looking for Amy, our host. She had mentioned that Jen and I were okay to use the park's outdoor shower. I thought that was a neat idea—can't remember if we've ever showered outdoors!

Tomorrow we continue our journey. We'll cross the bridge across Okanagan Lake and head up the west side of the lake, missing the horrendous traffic of Kelowna.

See you then.
