June 28 - Watson Lake, YT

We pulled out of Toad River early – around 8 a.m. as the drive to Watson Lake was 4+ hours. We were pleasantly surprised that the drive itself was very enjoyable probably because the scenery changed from mountainous to plains to hills. We saw caribou, dalla sheep and Wood bison. My illustrious photographer, with her new BlackBerry camera, took lots of pictures but they really don't do the scenery or the wildlife justice. Of course we could have stopped dead in the road, as others did, to take pictures of the animals, but didn't relish being hit from behind.

The highway took along the shore of absolutely beautiful Muncho Lake. Wow! The jade colour is from the copper oxide leached from the bedrock.
The picture above right was taken at Trout River between Liard and Watson Lake.

We arrived in Watson Lake around noon and pulled into the Downtown RV Park as it was within walking distance of the Sign Forest and the Science Centre. Sure don't want to do more camping like this - basically a gravel lot, a few perimeter trees, no picnic table, no grass. Only good for a quick one-nighter.

We walked over to the Sign Forest which boasts over 78,000 individual signs posted by visitors from all over the world. As one wag put it: "the largest collection of stolen property in the world." We thought it was a real eyesore, but Mattie decided to have her photo taken.

Jen and I also visited the Northern Lights Science Centre for their 6:30 show. We saw two films: One on Dark Holes; the other on the Aurora Borealis. Very enjoyable!

So that was Watson Lake – been there done that!

We leave for Teslin, YT in the morning. See you there!
