Oct 10-17 - San Juan Baustista. CA
We left Olema Campground just after 9 a.m. this morning. We knew we had a long day ahead of us. While we only drove about 150 miles, it took us close to 5 hours. Yes, we did stop along the way.
First there were the twisty, up-and-down bits before and after Stinson Beach. Then we got onto Hwy 101, the freeway, heading towards the Golden Gate bridge.
After the bridge were the San Francisco city streets. More freeways, more 2-lane highways, and more traffic heading out to Hwy 1 on the coast.
We pretty much saw everything today, but didn't take pictures of it all. We came around a bend and down into a wide bay - the bay was littered with surfers sitting on their boards waiting for the big one. We didn't have the camera ready unfortunately.
We saw a speeder on a rail line - thought someone was checking the line - then we saw another and another. There must have been a dozen of them, obviously touring a defunct section of line.
We saw a Mini, then another, then a whole line of them going up the coast highway.
We saw some more surfers, again sitting on their boards waiting.
We saw kite surfers on their boards being pulled over the waves by their kites.
And cyclists - there were tons on them. I'm surprised, the way they weaved in and out of their lane, they didn't lose a few today. Perhaps they did.
When we finally turned off the freeway onto the highway to San Juan Bautista, there happened to be a Subway restaurant at the exit. Oh, we haven't had a Subway for a long time. So I went and got our favourite, then we headed off looking for a quiet spot to enjoy lunch. We ended up in the strawberry fields - acres and acres of them.
We pulled into Betabel RV Park just before 3 p.m. The sun was shining and the temperature on the van's thermometer read 31C! It was warm!
We've booked in for a week. We have a nice shady spot amongst all the big fifth wheels and motorhomes.
Tomorrow we going to stay close to home. There are chores to be done and we need some groceries.
So until tomorrow....
