May 20 - Along the Scenic Shores of Lake Michigan
Jen woke up at the crack of dawn and took this picture. Me? Sound asleep.
We left our nice little beachfront campsite after breakfast and headed north on Hwy 35 just a short distance. There are a couple of county parks; 1 in Escanaba and 1 in Gladstone, a little farther up the road, that we want to check out.
Pioneer Trail, the first campground, won the day. We have nice site overlooking the Escanaba River. And we have strong wifi to boot.
We unhooked Ali this afternoon and drove to Gladstone. We checked out the campground there. Okay, but not as nice as where we are.
We returned to Escanaba and drove through downtown to the water front. We walked along the water front and found some plaques describing some of the history of the town.
Then we walked over to the lighthouse to have a look.
We drove one of the scenic drives south until it connected to Hwy 35 and returned to camp.
While Jen had her afternoon rest, I hopped on my bike and pedaled over to the dam across the highway. There's a very big lumber mill up river from the dam; the reason, I think, for the dam.
Tomorrow we head for St. Ignace on the north side of the Mackinac Bridge. The bridge (26,372 feet (8,038 m)) is one of the longest suspension bridges in the world.
See you there.
