For the past few days, an excavator has been constructing a building site just down the road from where we are camped. Most days the noise starts around 8 a.m. and knocks off around 5 p.m. So we weren't terribly surprised when the machine started up just before 7 a.m. this morning.
Ah well, we are on the move today; might as well have at it!
We drove through downtown Ottawa to meet up with friends John & Anne for our final get-together.
After a nice lunch (thanks again, J-B!) on the patio at Don Cherry's, Jen and I set out for Smiths Falls, a short drive away. Boy, it was hot. At one point Alfie's thermometer read 34C!
We stopped by Mary's new place to say hello. Mary has just moved to Smiths Falls from Massey, ON where we saw her last, a few weeks ago.
We then drove to the Victoria Park campground on the Rideau Canal. I had reserved a spot backing onto the canal but with the blazing temperatures and brilliant sunshine, we opted for more appealing spot across the way under the trees.
As the sun started falling towards the horizon, we went for a walk along the canal - sure is pretty.
You can see the old locks (above, on the left) and the new, single lock on the right.
Jen and I walked along the canal towards the locks then crossed over to the other side. We turned around at these fountains.
Here are the 3 original locks that were replaced with the single lock in 1974 when the road bridge was built.
