Aug 31 - Benson Sculpture Garden, Loveland, CO
Today is a day we have been looking forward to for quite
a while - the day we see the mountains ahead of us.
We left Goodland KS (el: 3,681′) this morning in a light fog.
But by the time we were a few miles down the Interstate,
the sun was shining once again. Gosh, we have been lucky
with the weather!
The scenery was more of the same - high plains, scrub brush, and a few trees. It didn't take long before we hit the state line.
At Limon, CO we stopped for coffee here. No, it was just a small park by the side of the railroad tracks.
We saw lots of sunflowers growing wild on the side of the Interstate as well as in cultivated fields.
What an incredible display of art, in a garden, for all to enjoy. We certainly did.
Tomorrow we are going to visit Rocky Mountain National Park.
See you there!
We stopped at the Tourist Info Center, got some great literature and tips, had a bite of lunch then headed towards the campground.
After Jen's afternoon rest and a cuppa, we headed into Loveland to walk through the Benson Sculpture Garden. What a treat is putting it mildly. We were both gobsmacked. Well done Loveland!!
Here are just a few of our pictures. You can view the entire collection on the website above.
Again today, just like yesterday, we have climbed steadily, but gently until we reached Arriba, CO at 5,228'. Both of us expected "the plains" to be just that, flat and level. We also expected, that as we approached the mile-high city of Denver, that we would climb some reasonable grades to gain elevation. But such was not the case. Over the last two days driving we have, very gently, gained just over 4,000' of altitude. Interesting.
We got to the Denver area and headed north towards Loveland. We did not really get anywhere close to Denver - it was somewhere over to the west covered in smog, fog, crud, whatever you want call it. But boy was it busy. We'd motored along I70 with a small amount of traffic now and again. We bypassed Denver by taking I76 past Denver International Airport. We climbed up a small rise and turned onto the main north-south I25 and were immediately into bumper-to-bumper traffic. Wow, what an instant change. We travelled north to the Loveland turnoff, past the EarthRoamer factory (you might remember we saw one of these "RVs" in Coeur d'Alene, ID some weeks back). Waiting to turn left into Loveland, this was the first piece of "sculpture" we saw.
Just one area of this beautiful park.
