Aug 9 - Bah Hahbah & Acadia National Park, ME
Today we ventured into Bar Harbor, the tiny little village on the coast of Maine that everyone knows. Yup, pretty, but busy. There were people everywhere, but what did we expect?! There are not many national parks in the east and the Acadia NP is one of the most visited parks in the US. So it's not surprising that Bar Harbor is a busy place. The town reminded us of Cannon Beach, Oregon. (I think I prefer Cannon Beach, but hey, I'm a westerner, eh?!).
We walked down the path to the ocean from Main Street.
We continued on to Ellsworth past dozens of flags flying on telephone poles. It seemed every other power pole sported the Stars & Stripes. Patriotism is one thing but this was almost a bit of overkill if you ask us.
We neared the ticket booth and saw the end of a long line of buses and cars. It really didn't seem worth it to continue the drive, so we headed back to Hwy 3.
We drove Hwy 3 clockwise around the peninsula past harbours full of boats. (I think we would have seen these same views but from higher up the hillside if we had continued the park drive.)
We grabbed a coffee and treats at ChocoLatte. We sat outside and enjoyed a flourless Brownie (J) and a wicked Cinnamon Bun (D). I'm salivating just thinking about how good it was, and not sweet.
Back in Alfie, we decided to head for Acadia National Park. We finally found the entrance (we'd driven past it to turn into Bar Harbor) and drove along the scenic byway. Well, it was mostly trees and the occasional lookoff to the ocean.
Might be hard to see, but there's a 4-masted schooner, the Margaret Todd, in the picture.
We walked along the coastal path until we were in "downtown" Bar Harbor. It's a fairly big town; this is just one of the streets leading to the waterfront.
Can you see the four-masted schooner out in the bay?
Tomorrow we head for Boothbay, ME, about a 3 hr drive down the coast. There are a few attractions in and around the area that we want to see. We've booked into a campground there for 2 days.
See you there.
After a bite of lunch at a roadside park, we were back at the campground.
