Sep 03 - Across the High Plains
We left Loveland yesterday morning in
the rain. But it didn't last long. We took
Hwy 287 towards Laramie, WY
(elev: 7,152'/2,201m) then headed west
along I80.
Interestingly, we crested the Continental
Divide twice on our trip to Rock Springs,
WY, once at 7,000'/2,154m just west of Rawlins and the second time at 6,930'/2,132m near Table Rock. Checking our map, the continental divide actually makes a big loop around the Great Divide Basin to the north, the reason the are two crests.
Here's a few pics of the scenery along the way.
We saw lots of these this morning – they littered the landscape.
We arrived in Rock Springs, WY (elev: 6,388/1,966m) and checked into the KOA campground for the night.
As we didn't unhook last night, we were on the road nice and early this morning. It's a beautiful morning, just the right temperature and lots of sunshine.
At these high elevations, the leaves are starting to turn already.
A short while later we crossed into Idaho.
How cool is that?! The J.C. Penney store where it all started here in a little town in Wyoming!!
Down the road, I asked Jen to take a picture of this feature. I thought it was neat. Turned out, a short distance later we passed a sign to Fossil Butte National Monument.
When we left this little park, Maud, our intrepid and sometimes annoying GPS, told us to turn right to get back to the Interstate. Jen said we should turn left as we were on a "bypass" and would meet up at the other end of town with the Interstate. So we turned left – sorry Maud.
Then we came across this in downtown Kemmerer.
We pulled off at Kemmerer for a coffee break.
We arrived in Declo, ID and our campground for the next 2 nights. The forecast for Sunday is rain, so we'll catch up on chores.
Monday we continue west to Boise then north to Cascade for a night. See you there.
We drove alongside Massacre Rocks State Park and the Snake River.
