Monday, July 11 West Creston, BC
A lovely warm Monday morning and after a little bit of work we headed to a coffee shop we saw on the way back from the Skimmerhorn winery last Friday. Thought we would give it a try.
Turns out we will have to wait until at least Wednesday. They're open Wed-Sun only. That's okay, we'll stop in another day.
We drove to the Mountain Barn. We've been here for the last couple of Mondays (a tradition in the making??). We do enjoy their home-made Carrot Muffins as I think I have mentioned previously.
After a delightful, non-buggy visit we ventured back into town. After picking something up for dinner, we hit Creston Stationery for some more paper, then headed back to the rig.
Shortly before arriving back at camp, the phone rang. We didn't pick it up but checked the message shortly after we arrived.
What a pleasant surprise - it was Cathy whom we had chatted with briefly at the Farmers Market Saturday morning. Cathy was just getting off her Harley Trike and stopped to say hi as we were walking out of the market. Well, one thing led to another. Pat, Cathy's husband appeared out of the market. Introductions all around and Cathy said we should get together "next week".
Lo and behold, that's just what we did.
Nonetheless, here is their cabin. Pat wants to re-side the horizontal planking on the right side and sandblast and refinish the 130 year old logs on the left, which was originally a barn. These two have done a really super job in the 5 years since they bought the property.
Just before 2 p.m. we headed out to their place in West Creston. Cathy had done a bit of baking (peanut butter cookies, gluten free). We had a brief tour of their cabin while Cathy made tea. I was interested in Pat's solar installation so we headed outside for my tour.
Quite impressive! A solar panel array on a swivel so the panel can be pointed at the sun. An outbuilding by the artesian well (Pat mentioned 75lb pressure with a flow rate of 25 gallons per minute for the well - equally impressive.) I can tell, writing this, that I should have taken a few more pictures.
Here's the corner detail of the 130-year-old logs that form the original barn.
Inside, hanging over the entrance to the bedroom, is this framed article about Pat (on the left). His bike is 1985 Harley - he still has it. The original article was published 30 years ago. His son suggested that he and his dad should re-create the picture (on the right) and another article was published about father and son bonding. What a neat story!
On the way to 'tea on the deck', we had a brief tour. The picture below is taken from the front door looking through the living room and kitchen/dining to the deck. Jen is looking towards the bedroom.
Hold on, the best is yet to come!
Okay, so how would like to have this view while enjoying your life at the cabin.
Boy, that is one picture that definitely does not do the view justice. I'm standing on the deck, probably about 150' above the valley floor. The trees and bushes drop away quite dramatically. All of this is missing in this "panoramic" picture. Oh well, you get the idea.
After a pleasant couple of hours, we said our goodbyes to our new biker buddies. Jen and I hope our paths cross again!
This isn't Cathy's trike but this is kinda what it looks like - similar colour, but Cathy has a large sheepskin blanket over the seat.
