May 30 - 100 Mile House - Summary
Wednesday May 13 - Saturday May 30
We have been following the Gold Rush Trail through the Fraser Canyon and up into the South Cariboo. We have just spent a very enjoyable 2 1/2 weeks with my old chum, Colin, and his wife Mary in Gateway just outside 100 Mile House in the South Cariboo (lake and ranch country). 100 Mile House is located on a high plateau (about 3,000 feet) and we can see some snow-covered mountains in the distance as we drive out to Colin and Mary's place.
We accomplished a lot on the trailer - brackets to hold the side and rear tarps in place, yet another re-org of the printer/fridge/microwave "stack" (this is the final iteration!!), a screen door to keep the %&#*!! mosquitos at bay, and a couple of other minor items.
Last week, I decided, with Colin's help, to re-wire the lights at the rear of the trailer. I'm glad we did! We got rid of an intermittent problem with the left turn light - a frayed wire! I returned the favour and wired in a new circuit in Colin's garage.
Early on in our visit to 100 Mile, I found a nice little coffee shop (One Another - A Coffee Shop) with free wifi, so we visited on a fairly regular basis. Good munchies there too!! We went to the Farmer's market (Friday mornings) a couple of times. We took a drive out to Canim Lake one day - Jen had never been there, even when we looked around the area during a previous visit many years ago. Driving back, I happened to glance into the bush and saw a BIG back bear. Jen hadn't seen it so I turned the van around. We both saw the back end of the bear hightailing it into the bush - man, that bear was hauling!!! Unfortunately we didn't get a picture, but just imagine the biggest black bear you can, sitting on his rump, arms down, paws resting on the ground, looking right at YOU. Now imagine him even BIGGER - that's how big he was!!
Even though we will be heading north, we drove into Williams Lake one day to do some shopping - a tarp from Surplus Herbies, a visit to Crappy Tire, and our favourite, the Bulk Barn.
Last Thursday, we drove out into "ranch and cottage" country - to Horse Lake then Sheridan Lake then lunch at a coffee shop in 108 Mile.
The weather has been good in general. Each morning the sun has shone, sometimes after the fog cleared. But most afternoons we've had thunder and lightning, most unusual this time of year apparently. I've never seen such dark, purple, foreboding clouds. Poor Mattie - she just couldn't find a spot to hide!!
Tomorrow, we head north on Highway 97 to Roberts Roost RV Park in Quesnel for a week. We want to spend a day or so in Barkerville, east of Quesnel, an old gold rush town.
