We left Dawson Creek this morning under cloudy skies.
We stopped at the Kiskatinaw bridge on the old Alaska highway. As we drove to the bridge, I couldn't help thinking of what it must have been like back in '42 building this bridge and the highway. From the PBS documentary film we saw at the Mile 0 House in Dawson Creek yesterday, on any given day the surveyors were only a few hills (that was "hills", not "miles") ahead of the construction crews. There must have been some mighty pressure to get the route right the first time!
I expected to see a few RVs at the bridge but there was nary a one.
We pulled into the Ross H Maclean Rotary RV Park and were assigned a nice spot between a couple of trees. After taking M for a walk around the park, we both thought our site was the best in the park.
Then we headed to the library to use their computers - the wifi at the park is intermittent at best.
After a morning snack, we headed back to camp. Jen wanted to view the monument to the 12 US soldiers who lost their lives trying to move equipment across Charlie Lake.
The monument has twelve plaques each containing the name and DOB of the US Army soldiers who drowned on that fateful day.
We awoke Thursday morning, our last day in Ft St John, to sunny skies. We had some chores to do and by the time they were done, the temperature had climbed into the low 20s. But it was coffee time so we walked across the street to the Whole Wheat and Honey Cafe for a snack.
I took this picture of my sweetheart there. Hmmmmm, me wonders what she's thinking about?!
Wednesday morning turned out to be sunny - a welcome change from the rain of the last few days. We decided to take the opportunity and drive out to the Peace River lookout just on the outskirts of town.
Tomorrow, Friday, we head to Fort Nelson, about a 4 hour drive north of Ft St John. See you there!
