June 19-25 - Fort Nelson, BC
Friday morning, we left Fort St John about 9:30, heading north to Fort Nelson, 4+ hours up the road. The weather was good and traffic light. At Mile 72, we went past the Shepherd's Inn – "An Oasis on the Alaska Highway". Yeah right, completely surrounded by motorhomes and RVs! I don't think there was a spot left anywhere for anything else!
Jen had earlier suggested we stop at the Buffalo Inn at Mile 143 (more than ½ way) and we were both glad we did. For a couple of reasons: the place was very quiet – only one 18-wheeler parked out front and a couple of cars; and we had an opportunity to meet Chris Graham – a Manchester, UK cyclist on a 16,000 mile tour, alone, around the perimeter of North America. Chris is riding for a cause – many of his family members suffer from early onset dementia. His 43-year-old brother has it. He's fed through a tube and cannot speak. Chris has been diagnosed with it as well. We chatted, over breakfast, for almost an hour. You can follow Chris here. Good luck, Chris, and safe travels!
We haven't really done a whole lot since we arrived Friday. We toured town and took some pictures for good friends Betty and Frank who lived here years ago. Fort Nelson reminds us of Chetwynd a lot - same highway/street layout.
We found a nice coffee shop - Gourmet Girl - and enjoyed some refreshments in the morning sunshine yesterday.
I'm taking the van in for service Monday to see if we can finally resolve the Engine Check Light issue - sometimes it comes on, sometimes I turn it off with my tuner, sometimes it goes off by itself. It's %$#%^ annoying and not knowing what may also be happening, well we decided, before we go another 961 kms to Whitehorse, we should see about getting it sorted.
We left for Toad River Lodge and RV Park reasonably early Friday morning.
See you there!
