June 26-27 - Toad River, BC
Friday morning, we said farewell to Fort Nelson. We took our time; there was no traffic on the road which was nice. I prefer to mozey along; it's much more relaxing than trying to keep up with, or ahead of, the traffic.
The topography of the area is extremely interesting. Where there has at some point in the past been a landslide, where the rock is exposed, you can see numerous folds in the rock strata, made when the earth was pushed skyward. Some of the layers of rock strata are nearly vertical!
The Alaska Highway is a paved two-lane highway; something I think that trips up our visitors from the south. One motorhomer from Maryland commented that he was not entirely sure what to do when he encountered the steep descents along the highway. Ya gotta figure he is not alone out there.
We saw our pedaling Brit, Chris Graham, along the way. We pulled alongside, asked if he was okay, and mentioned we were staying at Toad River.
We arrived a couple of hours later at the Toad River Lodge and RV Park. Gary & Judy, our neighbours from Triple G Hideway in Fort Nelson, were in the site right next to us! So the fun continued!
Our site is very large – a pie shaped site – right on the edge of a very large lake, a.k.a. beaver pond. After he set up his camp, Chris paid us a visit. Jennie was explaining to Chris that this area was good for moose. I must admit, I thought she was just stringing him a line – how did she know that, etc., when all of a sudden, she noticed a large shape in the water on the other side of the lake. Lo and behold, it was a MOOSE! Now new friend Gary swore the moose had antlers; none of the rest of could see them so each time Gary mentioned the moose, one of us would ask if it had antlers. It was good fun teasing Gary. Our sides ached from all the "antler" laughter. Gary was a good sport!
We spent a few hours sitting at the edge of the lake watching the moose feed. Quite a bit later in the evening, I happened to look out the window and see the moose exit the water and head into the bush. She was a BIG cow!
Saturday morning we spent sitting at the edge of the lake chatting with Gary and Judy. We had brunch at the Lodge, then I figured it was time to update the blog. The wifi is good, but the software I use to create the web entries is very slow, so I will have to wait until we get to Watson Lake to update the blog.
We head for Watson Lake in the morning. See you there!
