Aug 29 - Mountain Time Zone!
After a somewhat leisurely breakfast we headed out
onto I70. Here's a pic of our campsite last night - not
the kind of campsite we really enjoy, but it did the trick.
It was hot and humid again yesterday - we're looking for a break in the weather!
West of Topeka we saw this "announcement" of
the Flint Hills (never did find out what it meant!).
Also of note just west of Topeka we drove the first 8 miles of Eisenhower's Interstate highway system. The colours in the rocks were also very interesting.
At our first rest stop, Jen saw this.
We pulled off the Interstate at Ellis, KS for lunch. Little did we know that the founder of Chrysler spent his boyhood years here in Ellis.
We saw lots of these too.
West of Salina was a very large wind farm. There must have been well over 100 turbines (actually I looked on Wikipedia - there are 155).
A short while later we drove past Abilene, Ike's birthplace.
We drove past Fort Riley - a large military base with lots of hardware on the ground.
We continued along I70 and crossed into the Mountain Time Zone. Yea! We are getting closer to the west coast.
We knew we had been gaining altitude pretty much all day - too bad our GPS doesn't have an altimeter - 'cause Alfie was having to work a bit harder today. The climb was very gradual and as it turns out we climbed 2,711' (834m) today. Jeez, we're halfway up to Denver!
Over the last three days we have covered 968 miles. Since last Tuesday when we left our friends, Fran & Suze, in Bethesda, we have driven 1,675 miles.
Time for a rest. We decided to stay 2 days here in Goodland. Denver can wait another day.
PS: Small world! The couple who checked in behind us are from Qualicum Beach on their way east!
